What Is a Wood Wick Candle?

If you have ever heard a candle gently crackling and wondered what was making that sound, the answer is a wood wick. Wood wick candles have become one of the most talked-about developments in home fragrance, and for good reason. Here is everything you need to know.
What makes a wood wick different?
Most candles use a cotton wick, a thin braided thread that draws wax up to the flame. A wood wick does the same job but is made from a thin slice of natural wood. As it burns, the wood releases a soft, rhythmic crackling sound, similar to a fireplace or a wood-burning stove.
Beyond the sound, wood wicks also produce a wider, flatter flame that throws heat across a broader surface area of the wax. This means the wax melts more evenly from the start, reducing the tunnelling effect that can leave a ring of unmelted wax around the edge of a cotton wick candle.
Why do wood wicks crackle?
The crackling comes from moisture and natural compounds in the wood reacting to the heat of the flame. It is entirely natural and is part of what makes burning a wood wick candle such a sensory experience. The sound is subtle rather than dramatic, more like a gentle background ambience than a roaring fire.
Are wood wicks better than cotton wicks?
Neither is objectively better, but they offer different experiences. Wood wicks tend to burn more cleanly, produce less soot, and create a more even melt pool. They also require slightly less trimming than cotton wicks, though you should still trim the wick to around 3 to 5mm before each burn to keep the flame at the right height.
The crackling sound and wider flame are the main reasons people seek out wood wick candles specifically. If you want a candle that engages more of your senses, a wood wick is worth trying.
What wax works best with a wood wick?
Wood wicks pair particularly well with soy wax. Soy wax is softer and burns at a lower temperature than paraffin, which suits the steady, even burn that a wood wick produces. The combination also tends to throw fragrance more gently and consistently throughout the burn.
At Malmo Home, all of our candle refill inserts use 100% soy wax with an FSC-certified wood wick. The FSC certification means the wood is sourced from responsibly managed forests, which matters to us as much as the quality of the burn.
How do you care for a wood wick candle?
A few simple habits will get the best out of your candle. On the first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the pot before extinguishing it. This sets the memory of the wax and prevents tunnelling on future burns. Trim the wick before each use, and avoid burning for more than four hours at a time.
If the flame seems low or struggles to stay lit, the wick may need a trim. Gently snap off any charred wood at the tip and relight.
Where can you find wood wick candles?
Wood wick candles are available from a growing number of independent makers. At Malmo Home, every candle we make uses a crackling wood wick set in hand-poured soy wax, housed in a handmade refillable pot. The refillable design means you keep the vessel and replace only the wax insert, so nothing goes to waste.
If you are curious, our candle pot sets are a good starting point. They include the pot, a matching tray, and a match pot, all made by hand in the UK.
